Criminalizing speech is not the way to track would-be terrorists

There is something disturbingly wrong with this: http://globalnews.ca/news/1803553/are-you-already-violating-the-feds-new-anti-terror-bill/

It takes less than half-hour to take online speech underground, using Tor and its hidden services. It can take months (if possible at all) of highly specialized computer forensic skills and very expensive equipment to track and make sense of the chatter underground than it would take if it were in the open.

If the government were serious about protecting our national security, they would prefer the chatter to remain in the open. Criminalizing speech, however uncomfortable, will only have the opposite effect. One more indication that politicians (and bureaucrats writing the legislation proposals) don’t understand technology at all.
